How to get ready for a flare before it hits
A flare is hard enough without scrambling in the middle of it. The worst time to figure out your plan is when you can barely get off the couch. So make the plan now, while you're steady.
You probably can't stop every flare. But you can make the bad days less chaotic by deciding a few things ahead of time. Think of it like a kit you pack before the storm, not during it.
Know your early signs
Most flares whisper before they shout. Learn your tells:
- The symptom that always shows up first.
- The mood or sleep change that comes before the rest.
- The "something's off" feeling you usually talk yourself out of.
When you catch it early, you can rest, hydrate, or call your doctor before it's full-blown.
Pack the kit while you're well
Set these up now so future-you doesn't have to:
- Meds refilled and easy to reach.
- Easy meals or snacks that take no effort.
- A short list of who to call, and when.
- Whatever helps you get through (rest, water, heat or cold) ready to go.
Have a "tell people" plan
Decide in advance how you'll let work or family know you need to pull back. A flare is not the time to explain yourself from scratch. A simple "I'm in a flare, I need to rest, I'll check in tomorrow" is enough. You don't owe anyone a longer version.
The more you know your own pattern, the earlier you catch a flare. I track the small stuff so I can see one building instead of getting blindsided. Valeska watches for the patterns that tend to come before your flares, so you get a heads-up, not a surprise.
